16 May 2009 - Scratch Perverts

The almighty Scratch Perverts are gracing the turntables of barrow and its looking like being one of the best nights to ever grace Barrow! Supporting are the Media Monkeys and Ash Howell (Sourpuss djs). We also have cutting edge live visuals by Media Monkeys and Infected Tv. This night is not to be missed!!!!

The Scratch Perverts have garnered widespread acclaim. The team won the first DMC Team championships in 1999, claiming it again in the 'Perverted Allies' alias (a fusion of the Perverts and the Allies DJ crews). Additionally Prime Cuts claimed 2 consecutive ITF World Scratching titles, and Plus One won the Vestax battle in 2000, not begetting his returning the DMC World crown to the UK after a hiatus of 10 years. Their technical contributions include the 'feedback' technique and the Euro scratch amongst others.
They have now retired indefinitely from competition and gone on to regular live DJing, touring around the world & holding a residency at Fabric in London. They have also gone on to producing their own music, describing hip hop as being "a celebration of all kinds of music just by its very nature". Their influences have been said to be 'old school' artists such as Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa in addition to present day acts such as Dillinja, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Aphex Twin.[citation needed]

The Scratch Perverts are also notable for their adoption of drum and bass and feature it heavily in their DJ sets. They contributed to the track "Get Ill" as part of an album track for D&B producers Ed Rush and Optical.

So if u have any sense you will pencil this event into your diary! The ticket price yet TBC but as soon as we know u will! Monkeys x

Sat may 9th - A Darker Disco with Martin Jake

Rocking the Cinema room on sat is Martin Jake,

Martin Jake is one third of The Jake Brothers and one South West Scotland’s top party DJs.

After being blown away by the UK Acid House explosion and falling in love with the tough beats of Public Enemy, NWA and Ice T, Martin begged and begged for a pair of Technics 1200’s and a Vestax mixer – eventually Santa came through and Martin has been honing his skills for nearly two decades and rocking the floor for over 10 years.

Originally from Dumfries, part of a rich generation including Dan Monox and Calvin Harris, Martin began his DJ career in the mid 90’s playing local venues and parties.
Moving to Glasgow in the mid 90’s, Martin developed his career further broadcasting shows on Sub City Radio (Glasgow University) and Fusion FM (Strathclyde University) and has played sets at some of the city’s top venues.

Martin’s sets are always diverse and expansive - minimal, maximal, punky and funky. Tracks from across the electronic music spectrum are delivered straight to the dancefloor’s hips, leaving everyone breathless and begging for more.

09 May 2009 at 19:00 - The Sunshine Underground

Sat at the canteen is the Sunshine Underground.

Armed with an angular, beat-heavy sound similar to that of Franz Ferdinand or the Kaiser Chiefs, the Sunshine Underground got their start playing gigs in the Leeds area in the early 2000s.

They all went to high school in Shropshire, a county in southwestern England near the Welsh border.
Craig Wellington was going to school in Shrewsbury and Stuart Jones, Daley Smith, and Matthew Gwilt went to school in Telford. Eventually, Gwilt was accepted to go to the University of Leeds, and the boys collectively moved there after graduation.
They formed the Sunshine Underground soon after they got to Leeds, naming their band after a Chemical Brothers track. It was during this time that the band established important contacts in the music industry, eventually hooking up with ¡Forward, Russia!'s "scene fixer," who promoted some of the Sunshine Underground's first shows. They captured the attention of audiences all over Britain when in 2005 the band won a popular BBC-1 battle of the bands competition called Fresh Meat.

The band's debut single, "Put You in Your Place," was released on the City Rockers label in July of that year. They released another single in 2006, "Commercial Breakdown," and released their first full-length album, Raise the Alarm, on the same label a few months later.

A Darker Disco With Luke Solomon - Super Sunday

April sees world famous House Music legend Luke Solomon gracing the decks, at adarker disco Luke will be blowing the doors of the cinema room on easter Super Sunday with one of his legendary sets.

Luke is the guy behind Music For Freaks, Classic Recordings and the band Freaks (a re-work of their underground classic from 2004, ‘The Creeps.’ ‘The Creeps [Get On The Dancefloor]’ was released by Ministry of Sound, becoming one of the summer anthems, the most downloaded-tune in the history of DJDownload.com and was licensed to major television advertising campaigns)

Luke Solomon has had a successful career spanning almost 17 years.

He has worked his way up through the ranks gaining recognition from all different fields of electronica and dance.

Starting in the early 90's he went from record shop attended to securing a job Freetown records working with artists such as Felix the Housecat, Masters at Work, Jamie Principle and Marshall Jefferson. He then went on to work with Roger Sanchez at Narcotic in the mid 90's. This led to his long lasting friendship and partnership with Derrick Carter and the setting up of their legendary label, Classic.

Through all of this Luke has retained a successful production career with partner Justin Harris, as Freak's, and as a recently established solo artist, recording for Radioslave's Rekids amongst others.
Luke's debut album, 'The Difference Engine' was release in February '08 on Rekids, and a new album is due later in '09. In the meantime, Solomon has produced Damian Lazarus' new album for Get Physical to be released in early '09

Luke Solomon has been a fundamental part of the dance scene for over a decade
now and his contribution over the years has been nothing short of phenomenal. Now
in 2007, his sound is still evolving and his bizarre take on the new underground
house sound is very exciting, a master of the groove and never afraid of a risk, his
latest productions are arguably his finest work to date.

Luke began his professional DJ career in 1990 with a residency at Middlesex
University, which is where he met cohort Justin Harris. After a spell working in a local
record shop and as a part-time fishmonger he got a job at Freetown records, which
led him to long lasting relationships with Rob Mello and Kenny Hawkes. Rob took
Luke under his studio wing and taught him the ropes, together they went on to
release for both Freetown and Prescription Underground – it was through Prescription
that he got introduced to a certain Derrick L. Carter. A bond was immediately formed
and through their passion for House music and crazy late nights they formed the
legendary Classic Recordings.

Luke also formed a recording partnership with Justin Harris and are the masterminds
behind their band Freaks and their own label Music For Freaks, 3 studio albums
followed. This year Luke and the band enjoyed a top ten hit with the re-release of
their classic 'The Creeps' through DATA. As well as that Luke has been working on
his own solo productions and has recently released singles through Crosstown
Rebels, Gallery, Icon, Cajual and of course Rekids with whom he will be releasing his
solo album 'The Difference Engine' in January 2008. He also has a monthly residency
at AKA called Little Creatures and Moxa Club in Mantova, Italy.

THE BAND STAND- BARROW PARK

Tuesday 24 March 2009

Jon Byrne - It's Boring Being in Control - Album Launch - Saturday 28th March - The Nines

3pm - 6pm - Solo Acoustic + Support (Maudlin Rich, Lee Rooney/Paul Byrne from Sevens) - FREE ENTRY (This is an all ages show - U14s to be accompanied by an adult)

9pm - Full band show - Double Header with the very authentic 'The Smiths Indeed' - Tickets £10 (18+ Only)
‘There’s only one good thing that comes out of recessions – and that’s some red hot music.’

So says Geoff Martin, Director of Glastonbury’s legendary Left Field stage and Militant Entertainment (the label born out of the Left Field) as he prepares to unleash Jon Byrne’s debut album.

Jon Byrne was spotted by Clash man Mick Jones busking on Portobello Road. Jones was so impressed that he booked Jon on the spot for his Carbon Casino bash that night. That went so well that he returned for every subsequent Carbon Casino event and spent several months playing with the Rotten Hill Gang, the Westway collective featuring Mick and members of BAD and Groove Armada.

In the summer Jon played to a packed house at Glastonbury Left Field and won the stages ‘new artist’ award and the opportunity to put out his album through Militant.

Moving away from solo performance, Jon has teamed up with Bobby Kewley (The Christians) on bass and Paul Tsanos (Pete Wylie, Ian McNabb) on drums. Both have recently worked in the studio with American singer/songwriter Edwin McCain and performed with Ringo Starr during Liverpool’s capital of culture celebrations. Alabama 3’s Devlin Love contributes backing vocals on a number of tracks.

‘Jon Byrne is a star. It may be winter recession outside, but inside Jon’s music there is a warm, bittersweet fire burning’ - Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets)

Following the linage from the blues through to Woody Guthrie, the protest music of the ‘60s, the spirit of punk and the Specials ‘Ghost Town’, Jon Byrne is out of the blocks with the soundtrack for today’s deepening recession. This album is loaded with his ‘finger on the trigger’ social commentary.

Described as ‘Oscar Wilde meets Withnail’ Jon Byrne is a troubadour for the zeitgeist and the perfect antidote to corporate greed and the X Factor.

'Here's someone who really means it man! If you think (like me) that there's an intensity and passion in Jon's delivery that's rarely heard on record... then just you wait until you experience the man live …WOAH!' - Mike Joyce (The Smiths)
